Attack in Mannheim: Knife-wielding assailant injures several, including police officer

Mannheim, Germany - A knife-wielding assailant attacked several people in Mannheim's Marktplatz on Friday, injuring several, including a police officer.

The attack took place shortly after 11:30 am local time and the assailant was quickly apprehended by police.

The injured police officer is in serious condition, while the other victims sustained minor injuries.

The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has called it an "Islamist" attack.

Mannheim is a city of about 300,000 people located south of Frankfurt.
