Sylvain Turgeon: Senators Veteran

Early Life

Born on July 26, 1965, in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada, Sylvain Turgeon was a talented ice hockey player from a young age. He spent his junior career with the Granby Bisons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he quickly established himself as a top scorer.

NHL Career

Turgeon was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the first round (fifth overall) of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1983-84 season and spent the first five seasons of his career with the Whalers, earning a reputation as a skilled offensive player.

Ottawa Senators

In 1989, Turgeon was traded to the Ottawa Senators in a blockbuster deal that sent Bob Kudelski and Paul MacDermid to Hartford. He quickly became a fan favorite in Ottawa, leading the team in scoring for several seasons and helping to establish the Senators as a competitive force in the NHL.

International Career

Turgeon represented Canada in multiple international competitions, including the 1987 Canada Cup and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. He was part of the gold medal-winning team at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Legacy

Sylvain Turgeon retired from the NHL in 2003 after 19 seasons. He finished his career with 515 goals and 811 assists in 1,294 regular season games. He was inducted into the Ottawa Senators Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
